During the 18 days campaign in 1940 the "Chasseurs Ardennais" get six citations ("Ardennes" 1 DChA, "Canal Albert" 20 A, "La Dendre" 1DChA, "Vinkt" 1 DChA, "La Lys" GQ 2 DChA, 5 and 6 ChA, "Belgique 1940" Bn Moto ChA, "Fourragère 1940 de l'ordre de Léopold de 2ème classe" 1DChA, "Croix de guerre Française 1940 avec palmes" 1ChA).

The "Chasseurs Ardennais" who succeeded in joining Great Britain came back on the continent under the "Brigade Piron" or were integrated in various Allied units. Others intervened paradropped in Belgium as SAS agents.

Many "Chasseurs Ardennais" who fought in the resistance were ncorporated in Allied armies, either British or American. The 11th Fusilier Battalion followed the 3rd US Army led by General Patton up to Czecoslovakia.

Some volunteers took part at the Korean War in 1950, others later in Kashmir or in Somalia.

The "Chasseurs Ardennais" intervened as organized unit in May 1960 in Congo, then in Yugoslavia from 1992 and in Slovania for UN between 1993 and 1996.

They intervened in Bosnia in 1998, in Kosovo the next year and in Afghanistan in 2003.

The museum

The King Albert camp houses the museum devoted to this famous regiment. The visit is chronologically organized, starting in 1830 with a brief background description of the 10th regiment of the line, ancestor of the Ardennes Chasseurs. Then the development of uniforms and the battles of World War I and the Second World War, and the wartime resistance. The period 1946-1994 is illustrated by documents, uniforms, and items of equipment. At the end of the visit, the history of the new regiment of the Ardennes Chasseurs.

The story of the "Ardennes Hunters" begins with the birth of their ancestor in 1830: the 1st Line Regiment. It continues after their creation on March 10, 1933 to defend the Ardennes. This story is illustrated with documents and through the evolution of uniforms and arms until nowadays.

The museum dedicated to this famous regiment is based in the King Albert Camp in Marche en Famenne. It evokes the life and exploits of this elite unit. The visit begins with a brief historical background of the 10th infantry regiment, formerly “18de afdeling” of the Dutch infantry transferred to the young Belgian Army in 1830 and continues with the evolution of the uniforms, the 14/18 combats, the second world war and the resistance. Documents, uniforms and pieces of equipment illustrate the period 1946- 1994. The visit end with the history of the new regiment of Chasseurs Ardennais.

Personal note

.As you enter a military base you must leave your identity card at the entrance gate during the time of your visit and get necessary authorisations to make photos.. The museum is located at 40 km of Liège (Belgium).
