Historical information

Lommel was chosen as the resting place for German soldiers for those who died during the 18 days campaign (May 1940), the battle of Aken December 1944) and the Battle of the Bulge (December 44 - January 45).

This WW2 German cemetery ("Soldatenfriedhof") is the largest one out of Germany. It contains the remains of 39.000 German soldiers (about two soldiers per cross), it has been inaugurated in September 1959. It also includes 542 victims of WW1. For decades after WW2, German highschool students came to manicure the lawns and tend these graves, as a reminder of the cost of war. A specific Reception hall is foreseen for young people from any nationality (in order to learn lessons from the past).
