The museum

Entrance of the "Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung" which is not the museum but the central administration from which it depends

The Scientific Collection of Defense Engineering Specimens has a considerably large exhibition area offering the possibility to have a closer look at the different pieces of equipment, weapon systems and many other things.

The collection / exhibition focuses on:

1. Hand and machine guns
2. Artillery technology
3. Ammunition
4. Missile technology
5. Antiarmor weapons
6. Wheeled and tracked vehicles, engineer and recovery technology
7. Aircraft and naval technology
8. Communications, electronic and optical equipment
9. Personal clothing and equipment

The collection of military equipement (Wehrtechnischestudiensammlung), offering an exhibition space of 7.200 m², ranges among the major technology-oriented collection in the Federal Republic of Germany. Founded in 1962, the collection has been located in Koblenz, site of the headquarters of the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement (Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung) since 1982. The Collection of Military Equipment is a branch of the BWB.

With the collection's original purpose being solely the training support of BWB, Bundeswehr and industry personnel, its task now is far more widespread comprising the collection, preservation and research of technically and historically important examples of the development of the national and international military technology (including prototypes), in addition to conveying the equipment-inherent experience.

A special library of military technology and history comprising 15.000 volumes and 60.000 technical manuals, is available to the public on advance notification.

You may contact museum authorities there.

Personal note

Location of the museum was not easy to find by lack of map plan, we found the central administration (BWB) because the website of the central administration gives the map plan of it. However the way to get to the museum stands well on the website, unfortunately without map plan, this would not be luxury.

By car:
Use highway A61 up to Koblenz, then use highway A48 up to the exit "Koblenz Nord". Use then national road B9 direction Koblenz/Mainz. Follow the B9 up to the "Europabrücke" crossing the Mosel river. The museum stands 600 meters from the street called "Danziger Freiheit" .

By train and bus:
From the Koblenz train station, use bus on line 5 or 15 up to "Langemarckplatz" bus stop or line 1 up to "Reinfahre" bus stop.

Use the opportunity to visit the town and especially its old part called "Deutsches Eck".

Year of Visit : April 2007
