Historical information

Oosterbeek Municipality Cemetery

The cemetery is 1 kilometre north of the village facing Arnhem War Cemetery. The war graves are in the northern part. During the period 1940-43 several aircraft crashed in the area, en route or returning from sorties into Germany. The nine graves in this cemetery contain the remains of crew members from these missions.

Arnhem-Oosterbeek Military Cemetery

Near Oosterbeek, is one of the cemeteries holding the British and Polish war dead from Operation Market Garden. This cemetery, is actually British soil, deeded to England after the war so that her dead would always rest at home.

Only men who fought in the operation are allowed to be buried here. And surviving British soldiers still ask to be buried here in Holland with their comrades. It's a sobering place. And one can almost see the ghosts of those long-dead heroes pleading for us to learn the lessons they teach.
Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery contains the graves of most of those killed during the "Operation Market Garden" September 1944 landings, and many of those killed in later fighting in the area. There are now 1.679 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 246 of the burials are unidentified and 2 casualties are commemorated by special memorials. There are also 73 Polish burials and 8 Dutch graves.
